Another Retailer is Going to Ask for More

This is what I hear from a national distributor today:

Sometime soon—within the next two weeks, to be exact—SuperValu is going to “roll out a new program” in all of their banners.

The SuperValu banners include such important chains as Albertsons, Lucky, Acme, Biggs, Jewel-Osco, with a total of about 2,500 retail outlets nationwide.

What is the new program to be? Is it a special reading zone in top stores, such as the one that Safeway successfully implemented? Highlights on the mainline, cover… Continue

How to Increase the Effectiveness of Bookstore Distribution

A publisher recently asked me: How hands on should a publisher be with their bookstore distribution? Should they take copies out of lower-selling outlets? Can they put those copies into higher-selling ones?

The process of moving copies from lower selling outlets into better selling ones is what we call order regulation. Order regulation is being done continually, by publishers interested in their sales by store and by the distributors that distribute to the bookstore chains. In addition, decisi… Continue

Distripress: Despite everything, still a happening place

The annual conference of magazine publishers, distributors, and wholesalers convened last week in Phoenix, Arizona. Attendance appeared to be at an all-time low, but meetings continued as usual, new titles were presented, business was transacted.

Spotted: Samir Husni, AKA “Mr Magazine” giving his message of hope to publishers eager to receive it.

With the sobering news from Conde Nast kicking off the week of meetings, a pall settled over the proceedings. Have we gathered together to preside ov… Continue

Where has your National Distributor Been?

Some publishers have been finding that their national distributor reps have been more silent, less available of late than they were in the past.

Believe me, they’ve had good reason.

Think about all those outlets that had to be transitioned when Anderson News Company went out of business.
Thousands of outlets, carrying hundreds or even thousands of magazines suddenly were without a wholesale distributor.

The News Group and a few other wholesalers stepped in, and with really heroic efforts they… Continue

So What Did Happen First Half?

What’s with the notification on the pink sheets? Single copy sales for this period impacted by Anderson News closure.
The question really is: what period is that? Is it, as it seems to be, the February/March/April issues? It should be…shouldn’t it? After all, Anderson went out of business in early February. What they would have had in their warehouses were some February issues, some March, already on sale, some April, on their way to Anco and with nowhere else to go just yet, maybe. So are those… Continue

Hi Linda: The name of our company is Miami Mugshots. We sell a community newspaper with an emphasis on crime coverage in South Florida. We are just getting off the ground; having hired sales reps to distribute the paper in convenience stores. It is slow going and we are considering changing our model by using a periodical distributing company with a route in South Florida but they are difficult to find. I'm open to ideas anyone might have.
Thanks, Mark

Thanks for the feedback. And, thanks for coming down. Loved the session you presented!

I think we have a winner with the topic, format and small group setting. Look for the next FutureReady seminar in a couple months!

Linda,
If you set the final date of submission and judging for far off in 2009, then it would give us months to see what sources or avenues would drive membership to the sight. There should be a few different categories. I know a lot of your work involves newstand exposure but there is also a ton of B-B magazines that are never on newstands. The first thing to do would be to see what type of response there is from existing magazines. Then if we need more entrants, designers are always looking for exposure. I think it would be an easier task to get designers to submit mock covers.

I do have lists that I work with.
